These terms cover how you may use Walking to the Moon. How your information is handled is a separate document: Privacy Policy (https://joonwoopark.me/walking-to-the-moon/privacy).

The short version: walk, keep your journey to yourself unless you choose otherwise, and treat the people on your board the way you would want to be treated.

What the app is

Walking to the Moon turns the steps you already take into progress toward the Moon, Earth-equator equivalents, and a fictional World Trail. The app reads step and walking distance data from Apple Health with your permission and converts steps into a standardized step-equivalent distance using steps × 0.75 m.

That conversion is deliberately the same for everyone so that no one ranks higher for being taller. It is not a measurement of the distance you personally walked. Apple Health’s own recorded Walking + Running Distance is shown separately as a private informational number.

Activity before activation is never counted as post-activation progress. If you explicitly bring available Apple Health history, that earlier activity contributes only as a separate aggregate to all-time journey progress. On the day you activate, Today may show the complete calendar-day count, including earlier steps, but those earlier steps remain display-only and never enter the journey, Atlas, recaps, or Social.

The app is not a medical device

Walking to the Moon is for motivation and enjoyment. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent anything, and nothing in it is medical advice. Step counts come from Apple Health and from your iPhone’s motion hardware, and they can be wrong, delayed, or missing.

Do not use this app to make a medical decision. Talk to a qualified professional before starting or changing an exercise routine, and stop and seek help if you feel unwell while walking.

Who can use it

You must be at least 14 years old. Fourteen rather than thirteen because COPPA sets the United States threshold at 13 and PIPA requires a legal guardian’s consent below 14, and the higher number satisfies both launch regions.

If you believe someone under 14 has created a Social account, write to doldorijw@gmail.com. The workflow immediately suspends that account’s leaderboard projections, and the app-side Social account is removed only after a second, different allowlisted reviewer confirms the proposal. Until a second reviewer is named, the account remains suspended with its linked-identity holds in place, and removal completes once independent review is available.

Your journey stays yours

The solo journey needs no account. Your local profile, daily movement history, imported historical snapshot, and private recaps live on your iPhone.

Because the local movement store is not synced through CloudKit and is excluded from ordinary device backups, deleting the app deletes the daily journey record, including charts, recaps, private recorded distance, and observed activity dates.

If you turned on Social, linked Apple or Google, and your step aggregates are still shared, signing in on a new iPhone can restore your Social identity, friends, public voyager, and the server-held aggregate step position used for the Atlas. Imported steps return only while the separate imported-history sharing option is on. It does not restore daily charts, recaps, private Health distance, or device settings such as units and notifications. Pausing sharing deletes the remote aggregates, so there may be no step position to recover.

Social features are optional

Social is off until you turn it on, and it asks separately each time the scope widens. Consent to share progress is one decision. Sharing your imported historical steps is a second, independent decision that is off by default. Being visible on the Global board is a third.

When Social is on, other people can see the parts of your identity the app publishes: the public Social name you choose, your chosen animal and suit colour, and your standing on the boards you have joined. The app never copies your Apple or Google name or photo into Social, and it never publishes your raw Apple Health samples, your workouts, your devices, your real location, or precise timestamps.

Acceptable use

Your public Social name and avatar are visible to other people. Do not use them, or any other part of the app, to:

• Impersonate another person, a real organisation, or the operator of this app

• Harass, threaten, bully, or target anyone

• Post hateful content, slurs, or content attacking a protected group

• Choose a sexual, obscene, or otherwise inappropriate username or avatar

• Advertise, spam, or recruit

• Falsify step counts, whether by shaking a device, using a machine, or altering data before it reaches Apple Health

• Probe, scrape, reverse engineer, or interfere with the service or anyone else’s use of it

• Use another person’s account, or share a friend code with someone you would not want to see your progress

Falsified progress is called out specifically because a leaderboard only means something if the numbers are real. Fabricating them takes the point away from everyone else on the board.

Reporting and blocking

Every walker you can see, you can also report or block.

Blocking takes effect immediately and needs no one’s approval. A blocked walker disappears from your boards and you disappear from theirs. You do not need a reason and they are not told.

Reporting sends the account to the operator for review under one of seven reasons: spam, harassment, hate, impersonation, inappropriate username, inappropriate avatar, or cheating. You can have one unresolved report about a given account at a time.

Reports are reviewed by a person, which means a real human being reads them and response time depends on available coverage. Reports and the support inbox are not monitored in real time, there is no fixed response deadline, and Walking to the Moon is not an emergency service. If someone may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or a trusted local authority. Reporting someone does not block them, so block as well if you do not want to see them in the meantime.

Moderation

The private moderation service is deployed for this app and reachable only by individually granted reviewer identities. It supports temporary suspension of a reported profile’s leaderboard projections; this is not a complete account lock. It also supports report-bound Social-account removal: one named reviewer must propose removal from a qualifying suspension, and a different allowlisted reviewer must confirm or reject it. A proposal temporarily holds the target’s linked identities. Independent rejection or cancellation releases those holds and can restore projections if the profile still exists, but it does not recreate data the person already deleted. Confirmed removal deletes the app-side Firebase Authentication account and Social data, verifies cleanup, and prevents a removed linked identity from returning to Social through the same provider identifier. It cannot revoke the provider’s own Apple or Google grant and cannot reliably recognize the same person behind a later anonymous guest account. No operator workflow resets a username or avatar. Until a second reviewer is named, the developer moderates alone, and a proposed removal remains a pending, suspended state. Serious cases, including a credible threat or concern involving a minor, may be contained without advance notice.

Moderation applies to social features. It does not reach the journey stored on your iPhone, which the operator cannot see or alter.

If you think a decision was wrong, write to doldorijw@gmail.com and say so.

Deleting your account

You can delete your social account from within the app at any time. Deletion removes your authentication record, your profile, your username claim, your published aggregates, your connections, report relationships, and the projections built from them. Before dispatching a Google-linked deletion, the app asks Google to authenticate again and confirms that the fresh credential belongs to the same Firebase account. Where you linked Apple, the app revokes that sign-in. Where Google was confirmed for that account, the app asks Google to disconnect and revoke access after server deletion succeeds. If Google cannot complete that final cleanup, the app keeps Social closed on an account-cleanup screen, lets you retry, and provides Support; you may also remove Walking to the Moon access from your Google Account. Restricted moderation case, audit, removal-approval, and linked-identity hold and block records may remain under the separate retention rule in the Privacy Policy.

Deletion is permanent and is not reversible by the operator.

Your journey on the iPhone is not deleted by this. It never left your device, so it is yours to keep or to remove by deleting the app.

Availability and changes

This app is offered free of charge and is maintained by one person. It may be unavailable, may change, and may one day be discontinued. Features can be added or removed, and the social service depends on providers whose availability the operator does not control.

If shutdown is planned and reasonably possible, the operator may announce it through the support or policy pages or another available channel. Advance in-app notice is not guaranteed. You can export the active Social package from Settings at any time while the service is available; the local journey remains on the iPhone.

No warranty, and the limits of responsibility

The app is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind, including that it will be accurate, uninterrupted, or fit for a particular purpose.

To the fullest extent the law allows, the operator is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, for lost data, or for injuries arising from physical activity you chose to undertake. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, and nothing here takes away consumer rights you hold under the law of the country you live in, including South Korea.

Changes to these terms

These terms may change, and the current revision is published at the Terms link in Settings. If a change widens what gets uploaded, publication stays paused until the app presents and records a new consent version. Other acceptance or notice will be requested when required by law or the platform; the current app does not promise a general in-app legal-notice channel. Continuing to use the app after an effective change means you accept the updated terms to the extent permitted by law.
